Default Mini 9 with AT&T gophone sim - 03-14-2009, 03:11 PM

Hi All,

I'm trying to get a UK Mini 9 working with an AT&T gophone sim card in the US.

This is a UK sourced machine.

I've uninstalled the original Vodafone connectivity software and replaced it with the Dell wireless manager.
I've tested the install in both the US and UK with a UK sim card (from three) and it connects.

I purchased and activated an AT&T gophone sim card.
AT&T have tied the gophone sim to the IMEI number of my 3G modem.
AT&T have switched the gophone sim to the $20/100MB data plan.
I've got a strong HSPA signal (in the Marigny in New Orleans).

When I press connect, I get "Connecting to AT&T..."
followed by "Connection Failed" about two seconds later.

Any ideas?

The reason that this isn't working is because the AT&T GoPhones are only provisioned on the cell phone wap data gateway (wap.cingular), all tethering and laptop card plans have their own gateway (isp.cingular) which is what the software is trying to connect to. Your Go Phone account does not have nor never will have any access to isp.cingular which is why you can not connect, also the wap.cingular gateway is behind a NATed proxy and bandwidth controlled and so it is much slower than isp.cingular. There are ways to get it to work but it involves setting up the connection manually or finding software that will let you change the connecting gateway.

This also applys to anyone with a regular phone account that isn't paying $60 a month for the correct data plan, all other media net and normal pda plans are also only given access to wap.cingular.

Dan, I'm off to Florida next month and was going to get a AT&T Gophone sim...

What should I get to get onto the 3G or edge network?

James :-)
