Re: Quick question about SIM card and Mobile Broadband - 03-10-2009, 04:00 PM
In theory, yes. I tried it with a Sierra AirCard 875U and it worked perfectly with my iPhone 3G SIM card.
Of course, there are some obvious caveats - AT&T can tell if you're on a different device, and using the plan in the right fashion, so I suggest you use it in sparing bursts of usage and not use it for a week straight outside of your iPhone, or down and download some ISOs over a torrent or something gratuitous like that. They may simply flag you, cancel you, bil you, and/or change up your account for violation of terms of service.
However, there's also another issue with getting the right APN (access point name). In newer versions of the AT&T Communication Manager, there's no way to get "wap.cingular" entered, as it keeps saying "choose a different APN." This is likely to prevent people like us from doing what we're doing. It obviously works, but they don't want to make it easy for you to do it. The older software on my 875U device and on the CD still allow it, so I can connect. If the Dell software is easily configurable (or hackable) to allow that APN, then you should be good to go.

I'm glad to hear it works. Did you notice any odd charges or messages on your phone bill?
Anybody know if any other APN-compatible data cards this would work on?
I scanned the [http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...jsp#data]terms and conditions[/url] on the AT&T website and I didn't see anything under the iPhone section but this was under the Blackberry/PDA section:
