Default Dell Mini 5530 Easy GPS - 01-09-2009, 12:13 AM

Hi Folks ..

This is my first post but I've been lurking for a while. I recently bought a White 910 and then disappointed with the lack of WWAN socket, bought another through Vodafone Business while here in the UK. I've since mashed them together to make a White 16GB WWAN enabled machine ..

Anyhoo, back to the plot ...

I found these drivers and have put them on my site for now, which when used will give you a GPS port in the Device Manager ... The important part is the "Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile Broadband Minicard Device" in Universal Serial Bus Controllers. After this driver is replaced, Windows will then detect the GPS Serial port ... At least that's how it worked for me! :-)

http://usapilot.com/tmp/Dell_5530_GPS.zip

It turns out that now if you now run the Ericsson Application and goto GPS, you can turn the GPS device on and off!! Yay!!! ... No more HyperTerm and AT commands!!!

The image is pretty big but if you save it, you'll see the port.

I love my Macs but was unhappy with Leopard on my Mini .. I ended up putiing XP back and using a number of tweaks to make it like OSX.

It starts up with 26 processes and only uses 189mb of RAM ... I don't use a swap file and have 2GB RAM installed .. I Love my Mini!!

Take care and have fun!!!

Hi, nice find, and its much better than my method. It works perfectly, and now I don't have to mess about with HyperTerminal which is a bonus

Only slightly annoying part is installing all the drivers which takes a while as you pick which ones should be used.

Connection to the internet hasn't been affected for anyone who wants to know.

You may have to reveal not only hidden but hidden and non present devices.

To do this, you need to set a system variable DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES = 1

When you reboot and display hidden devices in the Device Manager, it will display non-present devices! .. hehe Go Figure!

This will allow you to delete eroneous com ports/devices and have Windows detect and assign them in order of their availability .. Does that make sense?

Have fun and good luck!

Caroline

Hey Dave ..

If you right-click on My Computer and select properties .. Goto Advanced and select Environmental Variables.
Under System Variables, select NEW and type DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES next to variable name and 1 next to variable value and then reboot ...

When the system comes back, right click My Computer and select properties - Select Hardware and Device Manager.

Under the View tab, select "Show hidden devices".

One by one expand each category and look for Dell Wireless 5530 XXXX devices. Each time you find one, double click it and select the driver tab.

Select "update driver" and tell it to "Install from a list or specific location (advanced)"

Select "Don't serach, I will choose the driver to install" - Next

Select have disk and browse to the the location you have expnaded my zip file .. Go to the X86 directory and point to the drivers in order.

If it can't find the driver, select one of the other directories. They are quite self explanatory based on the category the device you're trying to update is located .. Did that make sense?

I think there's a driver in:

Modems, Network Adaptors (2 in here when showing hidden!), Port (Com & LPT), Smart Card Readers and Universal Serial Bus Controllers ....

I would try doing the Universal Serial Bus Controller first (USBC).

I hope this helps .. Good luck!!

Caroline

Cheers Caroline,

Thats what I did, there is something going on here.

I can get info from Hyperterminal (on com port 5) but it wont show in the wireless manager

I think I will start from scratch.
